| What
Every Diver Should Know | | Decades
of experience has taught us that there are four requirements to successful diving:
proper knowledge, proper skills, proper equipment, and experience. |
| |
| |
Proper Knowledge. There are certain safety rules
that must be learned. With a professional teaching system (a manual, video, and
study guide), you can study this information on your own. An Instructor will be
available for assistance. |
Proper Skills. You must develop ability with basic
scuba skills, such as moving in the water and equipment handling. The best way
to learn is from a qualified Instructor at a professional scuba school. Review
and practice time reinforces the skills. |
Proper Equipment. The most comfortable, convenient
and enjoyable way to dive is with your own set of properly-fitted equipment. As
you become familiar with your equipment, your ability level increases. Servicing
your equipment annually improves your equipment's performance, and minimizes malfunctions,
which provides peace mind. |
Experience. While education helps develop knowledge
and skills, the key to becoming a comfortable and confident diver is simply to
dive as much as possible. Your experience increases as you explore different diving
locations, meet new friends, have new adventures, and explore new worlds. That's
why SSI's motto is "serious diving, serious fun!" |

EQUIPMENT TECHNIQUES
There are many resources for the sport diver regarding equipment. The equipment techniques class is not to promote certain brand names, but rather to give the diver the ability to be better informed when selecting, maintaining and packing of his or her equipment. |
DEEP DIVING SPECIALTY
Why deep diving?
Deep Diving opens the door to many new dive sites and exciting dives. The new sites could be, deeper reefs, wall diving or wrecks. The SSI Deep Diving Specialty teaches you how to dive safely to depths deeper than 60 ft, giving you the opportunity to explore deeper depths. |
NAVIGATION SPECIALTY
When a diver learns to navigate the way to and from a destination, a new sense of confidence and ability is achieved. Simply knowing that you can find your way back to the boat or shore, relieves the stress from the dive. The ability to be able to find objects, refs and wrecks again makes navigation a very important pat of diving. |
NIGHT/LIMITED VISIBILITY SPECIALTY
Why dive at night or in limited visibility?
Night diving allows divers a new perspective to diving. To be able to explore coral reefs, kelp forests and wrecks at night allows divers to see different types of underwater life not seen during day light hours. By using a dive light it allows you to see all the natural colors normally lost during daylight hours. To be able to dive in limited visibility safely will also reduce the stress before and during your limited visibility diving experience. |
ENRICHED AIR NITROX SPECIALTY
Of all the advances made in the last two decades in recreational diving, non had generated more excitement than diving with enriched air "nitrox". Nitrox give divers the ability to spend more time underwater, therefore giving them more opportunity to explore the other three quarters of the earth that is under water. |
DRY SUIT DIVING SPECIALTY
The ability to dive in cold water opens up an entirely new spectrum of experiences and challenges for the scuba diver. Dry suit diving will allow divers to extend their diving season. Cold water diving also will allow you to explore new sites and see different types of life not seen in tropical waters. In winter the colder waters will also offer better visibility than the warmer waters of summer. |
UNDERWATER DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIALTY
The desire to share our experiences with others is something all divers have in common. Underwater photography provides the best and most enjoyable means to do so. Taking pictures underwater can be a richly satisfying experience. - Having your own underwater Kodak moment. |
COMPUTER DIVING SPECIALTY
One of the greatest innovations of diving equipment is the dive computer. The intent of this specialty is to educate divers to use computers safely and to aid in making an intelligent decision as to which computer would best fit their needs. |
BOAT DIVING SPECIALTY
Boat diving is a different type of diving. Using different type of boats will allow you to explore new venues and dive sites that are not available when doing shore dives. One type of boat diving that is very exciting is the concept of live-aboards, which allows you the ability to travel to exotic dive sites and to dive in areas that are only available when using live-aboards. |
WRECK DIVING SPECIALTY
